No, not really. The punishments for the most small crimes were very severe , contrary to what another guy said. This is later than medieval times but after the colony of Australia was acquired, a lot,if not all of the criminals were sent there. I watched a documentary explaining that even people who stole bread were sent there... i mean for stealing BREAD! . Remember Australia back then was a **** off dessert and dangerous animals.
