ITunes Gift cards and Apps?

I get how to add credit and shop for apps in the store, but is there a way to use the gift card when you buy things within/through individual apps? I mean, if I'm playing Guitar Hero and I buy a song, it doesn't go off my itunes credit, it goes off my credit card. Any way around this?
